Acupuncture for women

Acupuncture is well researched for supporting fertility. Acupuncture can aid conception by reducing stress, regulating the reproductive system and improving blood flow. Acupuncture can be used to balance the body for natural pregnancy as well as alongside IVF to increase its success.
Acupuncture for fertility - whether trying to conceive naturally or with IVF - is recommended for a period of three months. Throughout these months, weekly sessions aim to rebalance the entire system by reducing stress, regulating hormones and increasing blood flow. Specific ancient acupuncture points are also used to aid in conception.

During the second and third trimester of pregnancy, acupuncture treatments are very gentle and can help with general relaxation as well as symptom management of nausea, pain, sleep disturbances and digestive changes among others.
We also offer Moxabustion, an ancient type of Chinese medicine which may help turn a baby in breech presentation. It involves burning a herb (Artemesia spp.) close to the skin at an acupuncture point on the little toe to produce a warming sensation and provide stimulation to the uterus.

Menstrual conditions such as PMS, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, PCOS and endometriosis among others can benefit from the balancing actions of acupuncture by reducing stress, regulating reproductive hormones, improving blood flow and reducing what Chinese medicine refers to as “stagnation” in the uterine area.

OAB is when the bladder contracts at inappropriate times (and usually when it is not full) This means you have to urinate more refquently or you may not make it on time to the toilet as the bladder muscle contract prematurely and you will leak (urge incontinence). You may also have to wake more frequently at night to pee (nocturia).
Clinical guidelines advise assessment and tratment of the pelvic floor muscles, bladder re-training, lifestyle changes alsonside a pelvic health Physiotherapist. However, for those people who symptoms persist, we need to explore other management options.
Medications (anti muscarinics) for OAB have mixed success and can carry unpleasant side effects such as dry eyes, mouth and constipation.
Recently research has suggested that acupuncture can be a useful tool in calming the bladder nerves and reducing OAB symptoms. At the pelvic academy, our acupuncturist offers elector acupuncture sessions which target the percutaneous tibial nerve via the lower leg. similar to PTNS. It is a simple, minimally invasive technique with no known side effects.
We suggest 6 x 30 min sessions over 4-6 weeks to feel the benefit and advise that you have seen a Pelvic Health Physio prior to this to confirm that you are a suitable candidate for the treatment.

Hormonal imbalance of the reproductive system, thyroid and adrenal glands is often due to a combination of factors tipping the entire body out of balance. Acupuncture can help to identify the root of the imbalance and then treat the body at the deepest level to address this root and restore balance throughout the entire system.

Acupuncture is a wonderful option for stress relief and management, eliciting an immediately calming effect on the nervous system. By shifting the body into a parasympathetic state, or “rest and digest”, acupuncture promotes deep, restoring relaxation that carries on outside of the session to reduce overall stress load.
-
Similarly to stress management, acupuncture can balance mental health symptoms by eliciting a calming effect on the nervous system and improving the flow of energy throughout the entire body and mind, as well as identifying physical causes of mental symptoms in the mind-body connection.

Digestive symptoms such as IBS, bloating, constipation, diarrhea and indigestion can benefit from acupuncture. Acupuncture can alleviate digestive symptoms distally by stimulating the nervous system which regulates the gut, as well as locally using specific points related to digestive function.

I am an acupuncturist, specialising in women’s health and stress. I blend a variety of Eastern and Western modalities depending on the needs of each patient, addressing health at the deepest level of the nervous system. I approach healing as an overall combination of physical, emotional and spiritual balance.
Sessions can combine acupuncture, reiki, massage and somatic movement with a psychological lens (influenced by parts-work and Jungian theory) to unlock stored emotion in the body and regulate the nervous system. Several years working as a health coach for patients with Adrenal Fatigue followed by a study of psychoneuroimmunology at UCL has informed this approach.
I have completed my degree in traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCM) alongside an apprenticeship program with Glenn Delikan in Five-Element acupuncture.
This approach addresses a variety of concerns, such as hormonal imbalance and menstrual conditions (endometriosis, PCOS), fertility, digestive imbalance, anxiety & depression, insomnia, low energy, and immune health, as well as general rest from a busy life.
In addition to this work, I lecture a psychology course to osteopathic students focusing on stress physiology and health behaviour change to incorporate positive habits into one’s life. Outside of work you’ll find me biking, hiking, eating and dancing my way around London!
